In an open letter to the President of the Dutch House of Representatives, Mrs. G.A. Verbeet, Vrijschrift and Bits of Freedom asked to review the counterfeiting numbers the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs communicates in PRs to justify the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. According to the ministry the OECD calculated the international trade in counterfeiting to be 150 billion euros. According to a Vrijschrift analysis, this number is an estimate, not a calculation. Data contained in a 1997 US Government Accountability Office report suggests that the claims associated with counterfeiting are massively overstated. An English version of the Vrijschrift analysis is available at the FFII website.
